Finding the right therapist can be hard. And sometimes, life makes it even harder—moving to another state, traveling for work or school, or living in an area with limited mental health providers. That’s where PSYPACT comes in.
PSYPACT (the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact) is an agreement between participating U.S. states that allows licensed psychologists to legally provide teletherapy and limited in-person services across state lines. For consumers, this opens the door to more flexibility, access, and continuity of care.
How PSYPACT Benefits You as a Consumer
More choice, less stress
PSYPACT gives you access to a broader pool of qualified psychologists—not just those licensed in your home state. This is especially helpful if you’re looking for a specialist (for example, in trauma, OCD, autism, or health psychology).
Continuity of care when life changes
If you move, attend college out of state, or travel frequently, PSYPACT can allow you to continue working with the same psychologist instead of starting over with someone new.
Better access for underserved and rural communities
In areas where mental health providers are scarce, PSYPACT helps connect clients with care that might otherwise be unavailable.
High standards and consumer protections
Psychologists practicing under PSYPACT must meet strict licensing, training, and ethical standards. States still maintain oversight, which helps ensure quality and accountability.
Convenience without sacrificing quality
Teletherapy under PSYPACT means receiving professional care from the comfort of your home—while still working with a fully licensed psychologist.
What About California?
California is not currently part of PSYPACT, but conversations are actively happening. CBH Partners’ Dr. Jayson L. Mystkowski is a member of the California Psychological Association’s (CPA) task force exploring California potentially joining the PSYPACT interstate compact. This task force is examining how PSYPACT could benefit Californians while maintaining strong consumer protections and professional standards.
The Big Picture
At its core, PSYPACT is about putting consumers first—making mental health care more accessible, more flexible, and more responsive to real-world needs. As mental health becomes an increasingly important part of overall well-being, tools like PSYPACT help reduce barriers and keep care focused on what matters most: you.
